1970 Mustang - The Year of the Boss!
|
|
|
The year 1970 saw the first-generation Mustang at its peak level of performance. The new Boss and Mach 1 models introduced the year before were now widely accepted, and many feel that the ‘70 models were the best of the breed. This was the year the Boss 302 achieved peak performance, winning the Trans Am championship under the skilled racing hands of legendary driver Parnelli Jones. This would not only be redemption (the car had performed well, but not well enough, on the circuit the year before) but would help propel the Boss 302 to the legendary status it holds to this day. There would be no GT for 1970, the Mach 1 and Boss having gobbled up virtually all of its sales the year before.
Ford continued to woo the public with engine options. There were nine powerplants available, all carried over from 1969, except for the 390, which was dropped. Several engines received a boost in horsepower, and the 428- and 429-ci mega-blocks continued to add spice to the engine lineup.

Although Mustang excitement was high, Ford would not match the number of units it sold the year before. In fact, there would be a 30 percent decrease in overall sales — down over 100,000 cars from the year before. Little did Ford — or GM or Chrysler for that matter — know, but this would be the first year of a trend that would haunt the industry for several years. The pony car generation was now in its sixth year and the polish was wearing off, not to mention the fact that many consumers already owned one. One interesting note: SportsRoof sales for 1970 came the closest ever to equaling those of the coupe, ending up just 1,734 units short for the year. The sales decrease, however, cannot diminish the fact that this was the year the Mustang blossomed to its full potential.

Body and Trim Ford’s experimentation with dual headlights on the Mustang proved to be short-lived. The company dumped the concept (first implemented the year before) and went back to single units. Rather than placing them outside the grill, however, the Mustang now had, for the very first time, the headlights tucked inside the main grill. The area where the headlights had appeared on all previous Mustangs was now filled in to round off the fender edges and two faux scoops were added to enhance the car’ s racing image. These were never made to be functional, and even the Trans Am cars fielded by the Ford factory team saw no use for opening them up. The tri-color badge was moved back to the center of the grill, backed up by a field of black plastic rectangular mesh. The entire grill, once again, was encircled in chrome trim. The Mach 1 got a special grill treatment with built-in fog lamps while the Boss 302 got the standard grill.

Ford ditched the dual headlights used the year before. The inner headlights now became the main units, and the outer headlight buckets were filled with two non-functional scoops. The tri-color badge was placed dead center.

The Mach 1 got a grill with two fog lamps designed into the rectangular grill mesh and, for the first time, no Mustang designation whatsoever.

On the flanks, for the very first time, the Mustang was left with no semblance of a scoop. Even the SportsRoof, which had been embellished with a special scoop on its upper haunches the year before, was left without. The only new addition to the side panels was a vertical, forward-slanting side marker light mounted to the upper portion of the front fender just aft of the faux fender scoops. In the rear, amber side marker lamps replaced what had been reflective units. A Mustang side script graced the front quarter panel as it had in years past, and a new quadrangular-shaped badge connoting engine displacement was placed below the script. Body-color side mirrors were standard on Mach 1, Boss, and Grandé models.
The only major change to the rear end of the ‘70 Mustang was in the taillights, which were now a chromed one-piece unit with three vertical lenses sunk deep into the bezel. The taillight panel was now flat instead of recessed. A depression surrounding each individual lens recess was accented in black. The gas cap design was similar to that of the previous year but had a wider band with knurled edges encircling a galloping pony under clear plastic over a black field.

|
Grandé owners could choose from a full vinyl top or a Landau-style partially covered top, black and white being the two available color options. The Grandé script on the rear pillar was carried over. Rear window louvers and a rear deck spoiler were optional on all SportsRoof models.
It is interesting to note that Candy Apple Red, an exterior color that had been a staple in the Mustang lineup since 1966, was discontinued. Paint options (with Ford code numbers in parentheses) for the 1970 were as follows: Raven Black (A), Dark Ivy Green Metallic (C), Yellow (D), Medium Lime Metallic (G), Grabber Blue (J), Bright Gold Metallic (K), Wimbledon White (M), Pastel Blue (N), Medium Blue Metallic (Q), Medium Gold Metallic (S), Red (T), Grabber Orange (U), Grabber Green (Z) Calypso Coral (1), Light Ivy Yellow (2), Silver Blue Metallic (6).
