1969 Mustang - Enter the Thoroughbreds!
The byword for the restyled 1969 Mustang was “bigger everything,” from body dimensions to engine displacement. Several new models, including the Grandé seen here, would appear this year. Dual headlights popped up on the Mustang for the first time, but this would be no trend. These were dropped in favor of the single units that had been used every previous year. The changes made to the Mustang in 1969 were the most radical since its inception, and many consider this to be the year that the car reached thoroughbred status. That latter suggestion is not hard to argue. For starters, the 1969 Mustang took on larger proportions to comfortably accept big- block engines that heretofore had to be shoehorned into the car’s engine bay. Secondly, the introduction of the all-new Boss and Mach 1 models were a huge boost to the Mustang’s racing image, which had been facing stiff competition from the Chevy Camaro and sibling Mercury Cougar in recent years. These new Mustang models were indeed stallions compared to anything that had preceded them. This was the heyday of the muscle car, and Ford offered Mustang buyers six different V-8 engine configurations — including the all-new 351-ci Windsor — with which to whet their appetites.
There were other signs that a new breed of Mustang was taking over. Gone were the side scallops and grill corral that had been Mustang trademarks in previous years. The 2+2 designation and “fastback” moniker were eliminated, giving way to the term “SportsRoof.” Upscale buyers were offered an entirely new model dubbed the Grandé. All of these changes would take their toll on one particular mainstay in the pony car stable. This would be the last year of the Mustang GT, the very option package that had initially given the car its racing image in the first place. And while the Shelby Mustangs would still roam the streets in 1969, their days were also numbered.
In the end, Ford’s efforts to inject new enthusiasm into the Mustang paid off. While the total number of units sold was down from the previous year, it was only a flesh wound compared to the slashing that had occurred in previous years. Total sales for 1969 were 299,824 units, approximately 17,000 fewer than the year before; not bad considering the 1967-69 total was more than 150,000 units!

The Ford Mustang would see some major changes in 1969. Many call 1969 the glory year of the first-generation because performance was at its peak and unfettered by excessive emissions controls.

Body and Trim The overhauled 1969 Mustang saw its biggest jump in overall length to date, up almost four inches over the previous year to 187.4 inches. Despite this increase, the wheelbase stayed the same, at 108.0 inches, and the width of the new body style only increased by about one-half inch. The front grill became even more exaggerated in width, stretching out to nearly parallel with the inner sides of the headlight bezels. Inside the sides of the grill was an additional set of four-inch lamps, making this the only first-generation Mustang to have quad headlights. All of this gave the ‘69 Mustang a sleeker look from the front, helped even more by the fact that there was — for the first time — no corral surround parked in the middle of the grill. Instead, Ford opted for a tri-color badge offset to the right-hand side of the blacked-out rectangular mesh.
There were radical changes to the side flanks of the 1969 Mustang as well. For the first time, there would be no scallops, and a chrome-accented finned reverse scoop was located where the previous forward-facing scoop had resided. Cars with 351-ci V-8 engines got the usual cubic-inch demarcation below the “Mustang” side script on the front fender, but the emblem was sleeker and more italicized. The rear panel sported a clean, straight inset panel, curved inward with three distinctively separate taillights on each side. The gas cap, very prominent on this model, once again, took its place in the middle of the panel.

The hood scoop found on 1969 Mustangs like the Mach 1 and GT models was non-functional (only 428 CJ-R engines were scoop-fed in 1969). This is an underside view of the hood of the Mach 1 seen elsewhere in this chapter.

The gas cap had a very clean design as well: a simple tri-color badge with no lettering whatsoever. This is the pop-open version used on the Mach 1. (Photo courtesy of Keith Harrelson.)

Upscale and sportier Mustangs got color-keyed racing mirrors. These were optional on all models and part of the package on Mach 1, GT, Grande, and Boss models.
This was the first year that rear spoilers were available on the Mustang. The brace shown above is a retrofit to cure an oversight by Ford engineers. The spoiler added so much weight that it wouldn’t stay up. The following year, the brace was added to all models with this problem.
