1967 Mustang - From Colt to Pony!
1967 Ford Mustang Coupe
An all-new body style and an increase
in size were necessary in order for the
Mustang to accommodate Ford’s big-
block engines. A larger front grill and
body-color side scoops make it easy to
separate it from its predecessors. A
whopping 75 percent of all Mustangs
sold in 1967 were coupes. Note the
restyled front grill with four spears
emanating from the center surround.

In 1967, the Ford Mustang saw the first major modifications since its introduction. All of the changes
in the styling and mechanics of the ‘67 Mustang had actually been in the works for years, and all
were geared to reflect trends in American automotive taste. In designing the remodeled Mustang,
the engineers at Ford took a hard look at virtually every system of the original and made
modifications to most. In the 1960s, body styles changed more frequently than they do today, and
an increase in overall size was very typical every time a model was revised. Perhaps the most
obvious evidence of this can be seen in the first 10 years of the Ford Thunderbird, during which the
car went from a petite two-seater to a huge lux-o-barge.

This was also the beginning of the muscle car era, and consumers were demanding more power in
their cars. The US auto manufacturers had already begun dropping in larger, more powerful
engines into their mid- and full-size cars, so it was only natural that the Mustang would need to be
modified to accept bigger powerplants. To do this, Ford had to revise the front frame and
suspension to accommodate a big-block engine. This, in turn, mandated a wider body for the 1967
Mustang.
1967 Ford Mustang Convertible
The restyled convertible continued
where it left off. Like before, the
windshield frame was fully chromed
whereas those of coupes and
fastbacks were body color. A power
roof was available in black or white for
1967. Note: This car has been
updated with magnum 500 wheels,
which weren’t available yet in 1967.
As individual models increased in size, it was also common for manufacturers to make them more
luxurious by adding plusher seating and more creature comforts such as power windows and an
adjustable steering wheel. The ‘67 Mustang would indeed see such changes. Because Ford
engineers had much more lead time to perfect the 1967 Mustang than they did the original, many
feel it was a much better car. Another benefit of adequate planning and development was that Ford
was able to launch a complete line right out of the chute, offering a coupe, fastback, and
convertible. While styling changes were obvious on all models, the fastback took the prize for all-out
changes. The sweeping roofline carried itself clear to the rear of the body, terminating in a notched
panel similar to the styling found on GT racecars of the day.

Sales for the ‘67 Mustang — 472,121 units, and an additional 3,225 Shelbys — weren’t as lofty as
those of the previous year. Much of that can be attributed to the phenomenal sales of the 1966
model, which no doubt took many buyers out of the market. In addition, GM introduced the Camaro
and Firebird models in 1967, and Chrysler jumped into the fray as well. For the first time, the
Mustang had stiff competition!
The coupe would continue to be the hot seller, garnering close to 75 percent of all sales. The newly
designed fastback and convertible saw a nice increase in acceptance as well, cutting into coupe
sales by over six percentage points compared to the year before.

Mustang GTs and Shelbys would continue to be popular in 1967. For the first time, Shelby would
offer two distinctly different models, adding the brawnier, more powerful GT500 to the line, while
also keeping the GT350 model in the stable.

Body and Trim
While Ford chose not to deviate from many of the main styling themes that made the original
Mustang successful — such as the grill/headlight configuration, side scallops, and tri-sectional
taillights — all of these areas saw some manner of transformation to adapt to the body’s increased
dimensions. While the wheelbase remained the same at 108 inches, the body was widened by 2-1/2
inches, and two inches were added to the overall length.

The front grill, now larger and flared at the base, adopted an even more aggressive feel. The
headlight recesses were also made larger and the “gills” were deleted, giving the car a cleaner
look. Ironically, Ford went back to the corral surround with four-bar directional theme of the very
first Mustang (which it had abandoned in 1966), and the whole unit floated inside the grill opening
over a black rectangular patterned background. The entire grill was encircled in chrome trim and,
as in past models, the word “F-O-R-D” was spelled out across the lead edge of the hood.
The side scallops mimicked those of the original virtually verbatim, but the chrome scoop insert was
eliminated and replaced with twin body-color finned intake (simulated) design. All models, including
the fastback, received the side scoop trim, and although a pinstripe option was available, deleting
the side scoops did not go along with it. The tri-color badge with trailing “M-U-S-T-A-N-G” lettering
was retained on the front quarter panel, this time on all models including those packing a six-
cylinder. Rather than a separate engine badge on the front of the fender, however, the engine size
(in cubic inches) was incorporated into the tri-color badge on all models with a V-8. The badge on
models equipped with a six was left plain. Rocker panel moldings were, for the first time, smooth
instead of ribbed. These came standard on fastback models, and were optional on coupes and
convertibles.
1967 Ford Mustang Side Scoop 1967 Ford Mustang Fender Emblems
The side scoop was changed radically for
1967. For the first time, a body-color faux
intake was used in place of the all-chrome
units in the past. These new intakes consisted
of two parts on each side, whereas all scoop
trim before were single units.
The side emblems consisted of a tri-color
badge with Mustang lettering as before, but
there was a new twist. The trim piece
connoting cubic inches was moved off the front
fender and incorporated into the tri-color
badge itself.
The rear panel housing the taillights and gas cap was profoundly recessed on the 1967 model as
opposed to the relatively flat one found on the original. The theme of three vertical taillights on
each side was carried over as a styling theme, but these were now totally separate units, each with
its own chrome-trimmed border. The attractive standard gas cap was a three-prong “knockoff”
design placed over a fully chromed, knurled round base. A clear plastic cover encapsulated a tri-
color badge surrounded by the words “Ford Mustang.” Chrome wrap-around bumpers front and
rear with body color bumperettes (with rubber facing) were also standard.
