1966 Mustang - Staying The Course
1966 Ford Mustang Convertible 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe
The convertible may not have sold as well as
the other two models, but it was certainly a
swanky car, especially when optioned out like
the one shown here. All ragtop models had a
fully chromed windshield frame. Chrome rocker
panel moldings – an option in previous years –
were standard in 1966. (Photo courtesy of
Keith Harrelson.)
The Mustang coupe reigned as the best seller
of all models for many years, and the 1966
coupe was no exception. Note the fog lamps
and the spears emanating from the sides.
These were standard on GT models, ordered
as an option on the ‘66 coupe shown here.

Ford saw little reason to tamper with the 1966 Mustang. With well over a half million units sold
during the Mustang’s short year-and-a-half lifespan, why mess with success? Ford was already
readying the Mustang for a major makeover for the 1967 model, so the 1966 only saw a nip and a
tuck to differentiate it from its predecessors.

This was obviously a good strategy, as 1966 would prove to be a banner year for the pony car. The
Mustang broke the one million milestone in sales to date, as a whopping 607,568 units were sold in
1966, exceeding all of Ford’s expectations and raising the bar even higher for the competition.
Chomping at the bit to grab a piece of the pony car action, General Motors was poised to release
two similar sports cars the following year: the Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Firebird. Chrysler and
American Motors also had competitive vehicles in the hopper, setting the stage for an all-out sales
race in 1967. Although 1966 would be the last year of the Mustang’s solo flight, Ford had to
chuckle that it took the others almost three years to launch their own!
The coupe model continued to outsell convertible and fastback models by a large margin,
dominating its counterparts with over 82 percent of total units sold. Of the remaining sales, the
fastback model outsold the convertible by just over two to one.
Body and Trim
The 1967 Mustang saw several body tweaks that many feel gave the car a more stylish, upscale
look. No changes were made to the body panels, and the chrome trim was pretty much the same as
in the previous two years.

The front grill was refined to give it much cleaner lines, which makes it easily identifiable. The
“corral surround” center emblem was carried over, but the four wings emanating from it were
dropped, leaving it to tastefully float in the center of the grill. The sedate mesh background behind
the center emblem was replaced with a slick unit made up of thin, stacked, chrome-plated horizontal
bars, making the front maw of the car eminently more noticeable. To further enhance the grill area,
Ford added the chrome front lip trim found on GT models the previous year as a standard item on
all 1966 models.
The chrome side scoop trim also got a major overhaul. The somewhat understated scoop accent
was replaced by a much more aerodynamic unit that featured three long “fingers” complementing
the horizontal bar theme found on the front grill. This one change is the easiest way to identify a
1966 Mustang from the side, providing the particular model had this applied. Mustang 2+2
fastbacks did not carry the side scoop, nor did GT or special edition Sprint models. Buyers could
also opt for the Accent Paint Stripe option, which deleted the side scoop and replaced it with a
pinstripe running the full perimeter of the side scallop.

As in previous years, the convertible sported fully chromed windshield trim, while coupe and
fastback models had body-colored A-pillars. The front fender badges remained the same for both V-
8 powered Mustangs and GT models, while the lowly six-cylinder versions got none at all. At the
rear, a new all-metal gas cap replaced the original version that had a plastic insert displaying the tri-
color badge. The Mustang GT gas cap, which was already all metal, was carried over from the 1965
model.
Paint options (with Ford code numbers in parentheses) for the 1966 Mustang were as follows:
Raven Black (A), Arcadian Blue (F), Sahara Beige (H), Nightmist Blue Metallic (K), Wimbledon
White (M), Medium Palomino Metallic (P), Ivy Green Metallic (R), Candy Apple Red (T), Tahoe
Turquoise (U) Emberglo Metallic (V), Vintage Burgundy (X), Silver Blue Metallic (Y), Sauterne Gold
(Z), Silver Frost (4), Signal Flare Red (5), and Springtime Yellow (8).
1966 Ford Mustang Front 1966 Ford Mustang three fingered side scoop
The whole front end of the Mustang took on a
tidier look in 1966. While the basic sheetmetal
remained the same, the front grill was cleaned
up and the rectangular grill mesh was dropped
for clean, straight lines. All 1966 models had
chrome trim on the lead edge of the hood,
whereas only GT models got this treatment
before. There were no spears emanating from
the corral surround; it simply floated over a
field of thin horizontal fins. GT models did get
side spears for attaching the fog lamps.
The three-fingered scoop trim is one of the
easiest ways to identify a 1966 Mustang from
its two older siblings. This trim, however, was
eliminated on fastback, GT, and Sprint 200
models.
1966 Ford Mustang Fender Emblem
The tri-color badge and
Mustang lettering was
carried over from the
previous year. All Mustangs
– no matter how modest in
options and accouterments
– got this treatment.

Interior and Trunk
The most obvious — and welcome — change to the interior was the five-dial instrument cluster (first
seen on the 1965 Mustang GT), replacing the old Ford Falcon unit. The new cluster became
standard on all models, making for a much easier-to-read, not to mention racier looking, package.
A large center speedometer was flanked by two smaller dials on either side comprised of (left to
right) fuel, oil temperature, amp, and water temperature gauges. The oil and water temperature
warning lights, previously located below the instrument cluster, were relocated inside the upper
panel area, centered between the two smaller gauges.

The most exciting interior option was the Interior Décor Group, commonly known as the “pony
interior” among Mustang fans. This stylish interior group was introduced in 1965 but didn’t take off
until 1966 due to increased awareness among Mustang buyers. Included in the Interior Décor
Group were attractive “stampede” embossed seat inserts front and rear (not available on fastback
rear seats), chrome seat trim, sculpted door panels with pistol grip door handles, a deluxe wood-
grain steering wheel, wood-trimmed dash panels, and rear window/door courtesy lights — all for a
price tag of $94.13.
