Modeling - The First-Generation Mustang
The Mustang came along at an ideal time for those who enjoyed building model cars. The hobby
itself was taking off at lightning speed and would become one of the most popular pastimes for
young and old alike. The hobby was also fueled by the exhilaration in the automotive world in the
latter half of the 1960s and early 1970s. After all, has there been anything as exciting as the
muscle car era since?

Three model car companies, AMT, Monogram, and Revell, led the fray early on, and a fourth
upstart, MPC, appeared the same year the Mustang was introduced. AMT ruled the roost when it
came to annual kits with its popular 3-in-1 series that included extra parts to build the model as a
stock, custom, or drag-racing version. AMT would produce the first Mustang kit in 1/25th scale, the
standard of the day. Later, MPC and Revell would challenge AMT with Mustang kits of their own in
1/25th scale, and Monogram (the oddball of the bunch) would release kits in 1/24th scale.
Early Mustang kits are collectors items that sell today for anywhere from $100-200, a price that
most car modelers can't afford. Fortunately, many of these kits have been re-released over the
years and these are much more affordable for the average modeler. The two best ways to find
Mustangs kits are by scouring the vendor tables at model car shows and/or by searching the
Internet for retailers and auctions. With a little diligence, you can find both the old collector kits and
the more affordable reissues.

It would do little good to list currently available Mustang kits because the list would be outdated in a
matter of a year or two. It would take a book by itself to cover all the reissues, so we'll just hit the
high points here. Listed below are some of the more recent kits that can be purchased at a price
that won't break the bank and will allow you the pleasure of building the Mustang of your dreams -
even if it is in small scale. These are organized by body styles to make it easier to see what is
available for kit bashing (swapping parts from one kit to the next), should you wish to make an
alternate version of the base kit.

Mustang kits will always be a part of
car modeling. Shown here are just a
couple of the offerings currently
available at shows and on the Internet.

Model manufacturer AMT was the
first out of the chute with a kit
(#6154) of the Mustang. Note there is
no designation for year; this kit did
double duty as both a 1964-1/2 and
1965 model. In mint condition, this
model kit could run you as much as
$200. (Photo courtesy of Bill Bozgan.)
The first 1964-1/2 Mustang kit (catalog #6154) produced was an annual 3-in-1 kit issued by AMT in
the year of the car's introduction. This kit (which includes a 289 Hi-Po engine) was never
re-released, so original issues demand a hefty price tag of around $200. Should you decide to
spring for one, you'll be delighted to find that the model can be built both as a hardtop or
convertible, and there are custom and drag racing parts included as well. A 2+2 fastback version
(#6155) joined the annual line in 1965, and both continued to be offered in 1966. All of these
command high prices, but you can find reissues of the 1966 coupe/convertible and fastback at
much better prices. AMT offered a revised version of the 1966 hardtop in the late 1980s, and these
are affordable as well.
1965 Ford Mustang Fastback 2+2 GT350 Model Kit
AMT added the Mustang 2+2 fastback
to its model line in 1965. The
much-cherished kit (#6155) was part of
the company's 3-IN-1 (it could be built
stock, custom, or race) series and
included Shelby GT350 pieces as part
of the racing package. (Photo courtesy
of Bill Bozgan.)
AMT also issued a 1964-1/2 Mustang (catalog #4804) in 1/16th scale in 1979. This kit, which has
been re-released several times over the years, is loaded with detail, including opening doors and
wiring/plumbing accessories for detailing the engine. This kit, though demanding to build, will prove
to be a delight to modelers who enjoy the big-scale challenge.

The most modern and easy-to-find 1964-1/2 to 1966 Mustang kit is the Monogram (now
Revell-Monogram) 1/24th scale release first offered in 1985. Being more recent, these kits do not
command exorbitant prices, and they are better tooled than the older releases. Better yet, many
modelers prefer the slightly larger scale because it offers a bit more elbow room for detailing.
The first of these releases were several versions the 1965 2+2 fastback (stock #2713 and Shelby
GT350 #6953). A Shelby GT350R (#2969) found its way into the fray in 1994. Monogram followed
the first issues with 1966 versions of the fastback: a GT350H (Hertz) fastback in 1986 and a GT350
in 1989.

Monogram issued new 1/24th scale tooling of the 1964-1/2 Mustang convertible (catalog #2456) in
1995. Even better, this kit can be built stock or, using the waterslide decals included, as the Indy
Pace Car of that year. Since this is a relatively modern kit, the tooling and detail are excellent.
Included are the 289 engine (correct for the convertible pace car), along with a full accompaniment
of interior, engine, suspension, and exhaust details. This kit was recently re-released by
Revell-Monogram in a collector tin (catalog #85-4157, no pace car decals included), so it can still
be found on dealer shelves, at shows, and over the Internet for a reasonable price. Note that these
kits have an alternator in them, which was not used in the Mustang until 1965, so you may want to
scratch build or kit-bash a generator for a true 1964-1/2 version.
MPC 1967 Ford Mustang Model Kit 1967-68 Mustang Kits
Upstart model manufacturer MPC
challenged AMT in 1967 with this kit
(#1367) of the Mustang fastback. The
box art showed a custom/race version
of the '67 Mustang with a special hood
and side scoops, none of which
resembles the Shelby version of the
car. (Photo courtesy of Bill Bozgan.)
Both AMT and MPC offered versions of the 1967 Mustang: AMT with both a coupe (#1367) and a
fastback GT (#6167); MPC with a fastback only (#1367). All of these original kits are priced in the
$150-200 range. The AMT fastback was reissued in Shelby GT500 (#6633 and #8599) attire, and
these are reasonably priced. The GT fastback has also been re-released (#31550) and can be
purchased at current kit prices.

In 1968, AMT and MPC both offered 1968 Mustangs, but they were more limited in scope.
Unfortunately, no coupe or convertible models were produced. AMT offered a Shelby GT500
(#T296) as a 3-In-1 offering, and MPC released a fastback (#1368) that could be built in stock or
funny car versions. Both kits included a 427 SOHC engine as part of the accouterments. The AMT
kit (updated in the mid-1990s) has been reissued extensively, the most recent version being kit
#31766.
Revell 1969 Ford Mustang Model Kit 1969-70 Mustang Kits
Revell's first venture into Mustang
modeling was this 1969 coupe/convertible
(#H-1261) that could be built stock, street
modified, or drag. The box art featured
the drag version with an illustration of a
slicked-up, jacked-up, shaker-scooped
428 Cobra Jet Mustang blowing down the
strip. (Photo courtesy of Bill Bozgan.)
In 1969, AMT and MPC returned to do battle once again, but perennial giant Revell joined in the
competition as well. AMT and MPC continued to focus on fastback kits only. The AMT version
(#Y905) was a Mach 1; the MPC was billed as a Cobra Jet or Mach 1 combo. The original kits are
priced at $100 and up, but AMT (which has since acquired MPC) has chosen to reissue the MPC kit
on several occasions (#0687, #1-0731, and #6319). The AMT kit also saw reissue both as original
and a Shelby, kits #8233 and #T-397, respectively.

Revell also jumped in with a coupe/convertible version of the '69 Mustang (#H-1261) that is now
quite rare. In 1988, the company produced a fastback version of the '69 (#7121), dubbed the
“Super CJ” and sporting Mach 1 styling. The following year it offered a '69 Shelby GT500 (#7161)
version of the Mustang. Both of these kits are relatively easy to find and can be obtained at a
decent price.

show produced these two kits,
acquired from a vendor. Both of these
re-issue kits are easily affordable for
the average modeler. (Photo courtesy
