1964-1/2 Mustang - The Mustang Takes Off!
The 1964-1/2 Ford Mustang was unlike any sports car that preceded it. The little sporter had squarish body lines more attuned to the styling of Ford’s passenger cars of the day, but three key body features gave it an appealing, somewhat intimidating look. First, the aggressive front end resembled a shark, with its mouth-like grill, inset headlights, and, indeed, “gills” (meant to simulate air intakes) on the inner headlight buckets. Both coupe and convertible models were introduced in the first year.
Second, the long side scallops mimicked racecar side scoops, giving a sense of motion and fluidity to the Mustang’s elongated body.
Finally, the humped rear fenders gave the car a sense of muscle structure as if it were crouched and ready to spring. All of this made for great eye appeal.
The production Mustang bore a strong resemblance to the Mustang II show car Ford had been parading around the country at auto shows in 1963. The original in-house designation for the Mustang project was “T-5.” During development, the car took on the monikers: “Cougar,” which would later be telegraphed to sister company Mercury as the name for its four-seat sporter, and “Torino,” before Mustang was settled on. The inspiration for the name came from the legendary P- 51 Mustang fighter plane that served in a combat role for the Allies near the end of World War II. The Mustang was offered to the buying public on April 17, 1964, at a very affordable base sticker price of $2,368. Those cars built from March 1964 through August 17 were known as 1964-1/2, or early 1965 Mustangs. Those built after August 17, 1964, received the full 1965 designation. Production figures staggered even the most optimistic among the Ford hierarchy, who had put original planning estimates at 75,000 units. To their delight, a total of 121,538 Mustangs were sold during the shortened four-month 1964-1/2 sales season.
The success of the Mustang spurred competing automakers Chevrolet and Chrysler to produce four-seat sports cars of their own, spawning such rivals as the Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, and Dodge Challenger, not to mention an in-family competitor, the Mercury Cougar. All of these cars were grouped under the generic umbrella of “pony cars,” a tribute that attests to the Mustang’s impact. It should be noted that Chrysler, having wind of the new Mustang’s release, tried to trump the pony car by introducing the Plymouth Barracuda three weeks before Ford’s announcement. The move did little good, and Plymouth would eventually be forced to put out a true “pony” car version of the ‘Cuda.

It would be hard to find another car that had a greater impact on the American automotive industry than Ford’s innovative 1964-1/2 Mustang. The idea of designing and manufacturing a four-seat sports car proved to be a stroke of genius.

Body and Trim Due mostly to sheer practicality, the Mustang coupe outsold the convertible model by more than three to one. (The convertible model only cost $230 more.) Of the total 1964-1/2 units produced: 92,705 were coupes and 28,883 were convertibles.
First-year Mustangs were offered in 15 different colors. Paint options (with Ford code numbers in parentheses) were as follows Raven Black (A), Pagoda Green (B), Dynasty Green (D), Guardsmen Blue (F), Caspian Blue (H), Rangoon Red (J), Silversmoke Gray (K), Wimbledon White (M), Poppy Red (3), Prairie Bronze (P), Sunlight Yellow (V), Vintage Burgundy (X), Skylight Blue (Y), Chantilly Beige (Z), and Cascade Green (S).

Without doubt, the most striking trim feature on the Mustang was the highly recognized galloping horse emblem inside its “corral” surround. With its four emanating directional bars, or “spears,” over a subdued mesh field, the Mustang’s front fascia is probably the one single most visual element etched in the mind of automotive enthusiasts, and no doubt it helped create the pony car moniker. The front end is capped off with wrap-around bumpers with bumperettes (standard on all models) and the word “F-O-R-D” spelled out across the leading edge of the hood in bold chrome lettering.
The Mustang’s scalloped side panels were further accented with simulated chrome intakes that would also become a Mustang hallmark for years to come. The front fenders were embellished with a tri-color badge with the word “M-U-S-T-A-N-G” spelled out to its side. Mustangs with 260-ci and 289-ci V-8 options were awarded an engine I.D. badge on the forward front fender. Chrome rocker- panel trim was an appearance option, and antennae graced the top passenger fender on models with a radio. For those who needed more cargo-carrying ability than the 8.9-cubic-foot (of usable space) trunk could handle, an attractive 48-inch wide chrome luggage rack was available for the rear deck.
The rear end of the Mustang featured wrap-around chrome bumpers (once again with bumperettes) tastefully notched into the fenders. The taillights were chrome units divided into three vertical sections, yet another feature that would become a Mustang trademark for many years. A distinctive chrome racing-style gas cap topped with the tri-color Mustang badge was mounted on the car’s inset rear panel.
Mustang convertibles had either black, white, or blue cloth tops and were delivered with a boot matching the vinyl color of the interior. Coupe owners who wanted a more upscale appearance could opt for a black or white vinyl top.

The front fenders were graced with the Mustang badge – a chromed pony superimposed over three vertical bars of red, white, and blue – leaving no doubt that this car was all American. A secondary script spelling out the word “MUSTANG” was located on the trailing side of the badge.
The side scallops were punctuated with a chrome side scoop, another feature that would become highly recognized as pure Mustang. This was a standard trim feature but was eliminated on the Accent Group option, which placed a pinstripe around the perimeter instead.

All Mustangs with V-8 engines earned a special badge on the fore front fender connoting their cubic inch displacement. The 260, 289, and, later in the year, the Hi-Po engine all had these badges. The six-cylinder had no demarcation; the area was left bare.
The tri-sectional Mustang taillight was actually a one-piece unit designed to look like three. This vertical three-pod theme set the trend for Mustang taillights to come, and though Ford has deviated from time to time, the company always seems to return to its roots.

Ford made a statement with the Mustang racing-style gas cap, firmly planting the seed that this was, indeed, a sports car. The chrome and plastic caps became popular among thieves, and Ford would later install an attachment cable to help curb such enthusiasm.
By shortening the rear deck, Ford was able to add back seats to the Mustang. Though not sumptuous, there was close to a foot of space between the rear cushion and the driver’s seat, enough leg room for an average-size adult. The pleated panels on the rear seats match the inserts on the front seats and doors.
