INCA OEM EFI Calibration Tool
ETK board installed in the case of a prototype controller
The connection between the PCM and
laptop is made with the ETK board,
shown here installed inside the case of
a prototype controller. A single cord
connects to the calibrator's laptop.
(Nate Tovey)
The standard of the industry today is the ETAS INCA system. INCA stands for INtegrated Calibration
and Acquisition system. Used by almost every major OEM today, it allows for real-time calibration of
tens of thousands of variables and tables while simultaneously recording. Cost of the system and
required hardware is well beyond the budget of most aftermarket endeavors. Interface with the PCM
can be configured with either an add-on module to the PCM itself or network interface over CAN
bus.

Additionally, the system requires the use of what is almost always confidential data. Two files are
required, the hexadecimal data record and identifier file. The data record is usually stored in the
Motorola S-record format (*.s19) and identifiers as ASAM2 (*.a2l) files. The S-record contains the
actual calibration and software data. The ASAM2 file is a “decoder ring” of sorts that indicates the
location and size of variables in the S-record along with their conversion from hexadecimal to
physical units. Only the S-record is actually stored in the PCM’s memory, so acquiring the ASAM2
file is necessary to properly organize and scale the data. OEM level calibration is far more intricate
than aftermarket tuning. The files used at this level usually contain tens of thousands of parameters
compared to the couple hundred adjustments available in most “tuner” systems. Keeping track of
this intensely detailed operation strategy and so many parameters often requires thousands of
pages of reference material to accompany the actual calibration software.
Once the proper files have been loaded, INCA allows the user to view all operating parameters in
table, oscilloscope, gauge, graph, alert, or numeric display. The size, range, color, and position of
the display is infinitely configurable. The configuration of this data display is stored as an
“experiment,” and can include numerous layers to sort data sets as needed. Changes to the
calibration data can be made instantaneously much like other aftermarket performance systems.
INCA adds the ability to change instantly, at the touch of a button, between two completely different
files while driving. This makes comparisons between two possible calibrations extremely fast and
simple. Measurement recordings can be taken directly from the experiment screen and replayed
later in any alternative display mode. The data acquisition rate and number of available channels is
simply untouched by the traditional aftermarket tuning industry.

Engine Management Advanced Tuning Engine Management: Advanced Tuning
by Greg Banish
As tools for tuning modern engines have become more powerful
and sophisticated in recent years, the need for in-depth
knowledge of engine management systems and tuning techniques
has grown. Tuning engines can be a mysterious art, as all
engines need a precise balance of fuel, air, and timing in order to
reach their true performance potential.

Engine Management: Advanced Tuning explains how the EFI
system determines engine operation and how the calibrator can
change the controlling parameters to optimize actual engine
performance. This book takes engine-tuning techniques to the
next level. It is a must-have for tuners and calibrators and a
valuable resource for anyone who wants to make horsepower with
a fuel-injected, electronically controlled engine.
