Carburetor Rebuilding Tips
Thermo-Quad Rebuilding Tips Rebuilding a Carter Thermo-Quad is not an especially difficult undertaking; however, a few words of caution will keep you from questioning your sanity once the carburetor has been disassembled. One important suggestion concerns removal of the accelerator pump from its chamber. As shown in the photo on page 92, a hammer and punch are used to remove the pump intake check assembly at the bottom of the chamber. What isn’t obvious is the gusto with which the hammer must be used—a light tapping won’t come close to doing the job. Be sure to position the punch squarely on the top of the pump rod so that it doesn’t slip off and chip the air horn assembly.
You are also well advised to treat the phenolic resin main body with a bit of care. It is, after all, a hard plastic and, although it is extremely durable, it can chip or crack if it is dropped or mistreated.

Nothing is more exotic than the garden variety of tools needed in the assembly and disassembly of a Thermo-Quad. Not shown is the secondary air-valve adjustment tool (part 109P-397). It’s not absolutely essential, but it does make life easier. If a carburetor stand is unavailable, use a block of wood to elevate the carb from the workbench to prevent damage to linkage or throttle plates.
In order to remove the metering rods and hanger bracket, a portion of the secondary lockout linkage must be detached from the transfer rod. This linkage prevents the secondary throttle plates from opening while the choke is closed.

Remove the screws that attach the metering rod retaining plates to the air horn. There is a screw and plate on each side.
The metering rod hanger is held in place by this spring clip.

Once the hold-down screw and clip are removed, the hanger and rods may be pulled out. The metering rods are not held in the hanger bracket when the bracket is lifted out, so unless you grasp the rods when lifting the hanger bracket they will “self disassemble.” Note the dimples in the hanger (arrows). The hanger should be installed so that the side with the two dimples faces the choke horn; they serve as alignment surfaces.
Next pull the spring from the meter-rod piston housing.

How to Rebuild and Modify Carter/Edelbrock Carburetors by Dave Emanuel
If you want to modify your carburetor-equipped vehicle for performance today, you can choose from three major carburetor families – Holley, Demon, and Edelbrock. While Holley and Holley- style carburetors like Demon have been popular for years with their well documented successes and quirks, there has never before been a book covering the ins and outs of the emerging Edelbrock line of carburetors.
How to Rebuild and Modify Carter/Edelbrock Carburetors reflects the emergence of Edelbrock carburetors as the predominant Carter-style carburetors in the market today. A revision of the best-selling title Super Tuning and Modifying Carter Carburetors, this book contains more than 300 color photos, illustrations, and diagrams, covering rebuilding, tuning, and modifying Carter and Edelbrock carburetors.
