Get Involved!
The best part of Mustang ownership is the opportunity to get involved with other enthusiasts who share your interest. Whether it’s car shows, cruises, or racing, something is available for everyone. Let’s talk about some of the more popular activities.
MCA – Mustang Club of America The Mustang Club of America has over 10,000 members worldwide, with local chapters in the USA, Canada, Mexico, and Colombia to name a few. In 2004, the MCA organized the 40th anniversary celebration for the Mustang in Nashville. In addition to celebrating the milestone events in Mustang history, the MCA holds regional and national events every year across America. MCA has a concours car show, with additional classes for modified cars, on-track events at locations such as Charlotte Motor Speedway, plus local activities unique to the chosen venue, that truly make these events a family affair. It’s interesting to note the generations of Mustang owners at MCA events, often several in the same family. For young and old, boys and girls, the Mustang is a special car, one that transcends all the boundaries, equally adored by all.

Fun Ford Weekend Bill Alexander of American Autosports has been organizing Fun Ford Weekends around the country for 15 years, adding one or two events a year. Needless to say, they have a full season. Every event includes heads-up Mustang drag racing, a car show, and swap meet. As a co-sponsor of the Modular Engine drag-racing class, along with Steeda, I am very proud to be associated with the Fun Ford Program. Ford has been directly involved in supporting the Fun Ford program, and helped raise the level of prize money available to the racer to the best anywhere. Payouts are up to $10,000 per class winner, and series champions walk away with the keys for a brand new Mustang. This is just one reason why the Fun Ford racing series attracts racers from outside the world of Mustangs to come and join our brand of racing. Many people wait all year, preparing their cars for the Fun Ford Weekend coming to their local track. The Spring Break Shootout, traditionally held in late February in Florida, is legendary, not only for the racing, but also for the after-racing party and freestyle burnout contest held at the local Hooters. Bill runs a first-class show – you should definitely come on out and see one.

Fun Ford embraced the 4.6L-powered Mustangs early on and formed the Mod Motor class to provide a venue for them. The class was sponsored from the beginning by Steeda/Sean Hyland, but the addition of some Ford backing enabled payouts of up to $10,000 per event.

NMRA – National Mustang Racers Association The NMRA holds heads-up drag racing, using classes similar to the Fun Ford format. These events take place at venues throughout the U.S., attracting some of the top Mustang drag racers. The NMRA has put together a solid championship in the past seven years. Racers and aftermarket manufacturers like to test their skills and abilities in a competitive arena, and the NMRA certainly provides that.

The many heads-up classes for Mustangs are exciting for the fans to watch and fun for the drivers. The first man to the end wins – period.

WFC – World Ford Challenge Eight years ago, George Gonzales had a concept of creating an amazing weekend of Mustang drag racing. First, he lined up the most prize money – winning the Pro 5.0 class at WFC pays $35,000 – big money by anyone’s standards. The WFC event includes several classes of heads-up Mustang racing, a car show, and a manufacturers’ midway. For the past several years, WFC has been held in St. Louis in mid May. George has certainly managed to create the largest single-weekend Mustang drag racing event anywhere.

The True Street class is where street-legal Mustangs must drive a 30-mile loop on public roads, and then run three passes without opening the hoods. Low nine-second ETs are required for an overall win in this class.

SCCA – Sports Car Club of America The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) organizes a variety of events, from entry-level autocross events, right up through Speed World Challenge professional road racing. Even if you don’t want to compete, they have a spot for you. As a track marshal, you can get right up close to the action, and you get to hang around with all the racers, without having to actually race. Autocross is a great entry-level motorsport, and a lot of people, myself included, got their start there. You can literally drive your street car in off the road and enter into timed competition on a pylon course laid out in a parking lot. It may look amateur, but don’t kid yourself, top autocross drivers have amazing car control, able to place their car within fractions of an inch, every time they are on the course. SN95 Mustangs fit in several stock and modified classes, and are competitive cars at autocross events.
Club racing is sanctioned by SCCA at tracks across the country. It provides road racers an opportunity to race competitively without the expense of a traveling series. Those who wish to pursue higher goals can race within their division, and if successful enough, can earn a berth at the national runoffs held every fall and compete to be a national champion. Mustangs have competed in the T1 Showroom Stock class, and are quite successful in A Sedan against Camaros and Firebirds.
Racers with enough budget can run in the Speed World Challenge, an SCCA Pro Racing category featuring a sprint race format, pitting themselves against some of the world’s best road racers at venues right across the country. Given the budget required, and the list of manufacturers involved directly, Mustangs have not been contesting for podium positions in Speed World Challenge. But given the right resources, a good Mustang team could compete equally with the Corvettes and Vipers in this series.

High-performance ‘94-‘04 Mustangs represent the high-water mark for late- model Mustang enthusiasts. From the ’94-’95s with the 5.0L, through the ‘96-‘04 models with the 2- and 4-valve 4.6 Ls, to the Bullitt, Mach 1, and factory supercharged ’03-‘04 Cobras – never before has such a range of highly modifiable performance cars been available. These Mustangs were amazing performers straight from the factory, but they can be even better with the right combination of performance parts. Regardless of which ’94-’04 Mustang you start with, the availability of high- performance parts is unparalleled. You can build your Mustang for drag racing, road racing, or improved street performance – and High- Performance Mustang Builder’s Guide 1994-2004 will show you how! Author Sean Hyland uses over 300 photos to explain how to upgrade your Mustang’s engine, suspension, chassis, transmission, rear end, brakes, and body. There’s even a special chapter on getting active in various forms of organized racing.
Sean Hyland is the proprietor of Sean Hyland Motorsport, which builds and supports internationally competitive Mustangs for road racing, drag racing, and everything in between. Sean recently did a complete Mustang build-up for Speed Channel’s Sports Car Revolution and is also the author of the bestselling title How to Build Max-Performance 4.6-Liter Ford Engines.

Building 4.6/5.4L Ford Horsepower on the Dyno This book takes the guesswork out of modification and parts selection by showing you the types of horsepower and torque gains expected with each modification. More than 340 photos and 185 dyno graphs show you which parts increase horsepower and torque, and which parts don't deliver on their promises. Includes complete before-and-after dyno graphs, so you can see where in the RPM range these parts make (or lose) the most horsepower and torque. Covers 2-, 3-, and 4-valve modular engines.
