The Ranger and Bronco II V-8 Conversion
Rear Axle
Rangers came with two different rear differentials, one with a 7.5-inch diameter ring gear and the
other with an 8.8-inch ring gear. The 8.8 are preferred as it's the same differential used in Mustang
GT and many other cars. It is considerably stronger than the 7.5 inch. The 8.8 inch rear differential
is strong enough to handle even a healthy big block. Parts such as different ratio gear sets are
available for either rear differential from many suppliers. Both of these rear differentials have been
offered as traction-lok rear differentials at different times and in later model Rangers, particularly 4
wheel drives, many are factory equipped with traction-lok rear differentials. A traction-lok or posi
rear differential will help your new V8 apply its power to ground and allow your truck to accelerate
as quickly as possible.

If your truck has a 7.5-inch
differential and your putting a V8 in it
might be a good idea to locate a
8.8-inch traction-lok differential to
install in your Ranger. All Ford rear
differentials have a tag installed from
the factory which identifies the
differential, gives its gear ratio, and
tells if it's a limited slip.

If you wish to convert your current rear differential to a traction-lok the parts are available from
many sources. Ford Motorsport offers traction-lok differentials for 7.5 inch rear ends with 28 spline
axles, part # M-4204-C75, and for 8.8 with 28 spline axles, part # M-4204-A28, and also
for 8.8 with 31 spline axles, part # M-4204-A31, for around $260.00. These differentials all use
plate type clutches to apply some power to the wheel with the most traction.
The next step up offered by Ford Motorsport is the Auburn Heavy-Duty differentials. These
differentials use cone shaped axle gears for clutches and actually lock tighter the more power is
applied to them. These are available under part number M-4204-A28 for an 8.8-inch differential
with 28 spline axles, and part number M-4204-A31 for an 8.8-inch differential with 31 spline axles
for around $330.00.
The top of line unit offered by Ford Motorsport is the Auburn Pro differential. These have
approximately 50% more torque bias than the Auburn Heavy Duty. These are available under part
number M-4204-P28 for an 8.8-inch differential with 28 splines, and under part number
M-4204-P31 for an 8.8-inch differential with 31 splines, for around $450.00.
