Edelbrock Quadrajets
For decades the Edelbrock company has made aluminum heads, intake manifolds, carburetors,
and other accessories for the high-performance market. It offered both replacement and high-
performance Quadrajet carburetors for many years. The replacement units were limited to several
basic styles, all with side fuel-inlet locations and both electric and divorced chokes.
For high-performance use, Edelbrock offered their “RPM” Q-jet. It was the first and only true high-
performance Quadrajet ever offered in large production by an aftermarket manufacturing facility.
Based on the late Chevrolet castings, they featured a host of upgrades to the standard units.
Edelbrock rated them at 850 cfm for powering engines over 450 hp.
Edelbrock Perormer RPM Quadrajet carburetor
The only aftermarket high-performance
Quadrajet produced on a large scale was the
Performer RPM Q-jet from Edelbrock. The part
number for the RPM Q-jet is 1910. These units
featured a host of high-performance
modifications, generous idle-fuel calibrations
and were advertised as 850 cfm. The RPM
Q-jet was only offered in a side fuel-inlet
model. It is based on the late-style large
primary bore Chevrolet castings and came with
an electric choke to make it easy to retrofit to
almost any application.
Disassembled Edelbrock Quadrajet
Here our RPM Q-jet is shown
disassembled for inspection.
Edelbrock installed a high-performance fuel inlet seat with a hole diameter of .149 inch. The
accelerator pump had a shortened shaft and stiff duration spring for maximum fuel delivery. They
featured a stiff spring under the pump to help return the throttle to the closed position. They would
use the late-style “M” primary metering rods, small float and quick opening choke pull-off. The full
open angle of the secondary air flaps was set at 1.270 inches, as measured from the leading edge
of the flaps to the rear of opening in the casting.
Measuring the air flaps opening
Rated at 850 cfm, the air flaps open to
a full-open point of 1.270 inches as
measured from the leading edge of the
flaps back to the opening in the air
horn as shown.
The secondary air flaps also received two additional holes and two small tabs to help with air
distribution into the secondary throttle bores.
Secondary air flaps
The secondary air flaps contain round
holes and “tabs.” The round holes are
located inboard and on the front half of
the air flaps. They allow some fuel to
be pulled into the engine from the
accelerating holes located just above
the air flaps. The “tabs” on the rear
portion of the air flaps are designed to
help air and fuel distribution into the
carburetor at full throttle.
The basic castings used were identical to the later Chevrolet side-inlet large primary-bore
carburetors, using the late-style adjustable part throttle (APT) system and float arrangement.
They used a single pair of main air bleeds in the air horn, and the upper idle air bleeds were in the
main casting just above the idle channel restrictions.

They came with an electric choke as standard equipment to make them more universal. The
standard late-style Chevrolet throttle linkage was used, with several provisions for installing throttle
cable hook-ups and a lower location for return springs and a transmission downshift linkage.
Adjusting the part throttle mixture screw The Edelbrock Quadrajet has a removeable set screw for quick adjustments
The Adjustable Part Throttle (APT) screw is
slotted so it can be adjusted with a small flat-tip
screwdriver.
A removable set screw is located in the air
horn just above the APT screw. This allows
easy access to the APT for quick, fine
adjustments without taking the carburetor
apart.
The main air bleed location Electric choke feature
The RPM Q-jet is based on the later-style
single main air-bleed design. The single pair of
main air bleeds is located in the air horn and
extend at an angle into the incoming air stream
on the primary side of the carburetor.
The RPM Q-jets were equipped with electric
chokes. This makes them more universal and
can be easily retrofitted onto earlier engines
originally set up for divorced chokes. As with
most late-model emission-years carburetors
that used an electric choke, the choke held in
place with rivets to prevent tampering. The
rivets can be removed and the choke housing
tapped for screws if adjustments are required.

How to Rebuild and Modify Rochester Quadrajet Carburetors How to Rebuild and Modify
Rochester Quadrajet Carburetors
by Cliff Ruggles
The Rochester Quadrajet carburetor was found perched atop the
engine of many classic GM and Ford performance vehicles. The
Q-Jet is a very capable, but often misunderstood carb. This book,
How to Rebuild and Modify Rochester Quadrajet Carburetors,
seeks to lift the veil of mystery surrounding the Q-Jet and show
owners how to tune and modify their carbs for maximum
performance. A complete guide to selecting, rebuilding, and
modifying the Q- Jet, aimed at both muscle car restorers and
racers. It includes a history of the Q-Jet, an explanation of how the
carb works, a guide to selecting and finding the right carb,
instructions on how to rebuild the carb, and extensive descriptions
of high-performance modifications that will help anyone with a
Q-Jet car crush the competition.
