Tools Required for Rebuilding a Quadrajet Carburetor
Rebuilding and modifying the Quadrajet carburetor is not incredibly difficult. It requires some basic
hand tools and other equipment recommended in this chapter. Many of the items mentioned are
nothing more than standard hand tools normally found in most home tool kits or mechanic’s sets.
Very few “special” tools are needed. In this chapter we mention many different tools and specifically
what they are used for. Some of these tools have been modified slightly for a specific use. We also
go into greater detail with a few of the more complicated machining processes involved for those
with the access to these tools and the skill to do the work.
A Place to Work
Rebuilding and modifying your Quadrajet carburetor does not require a large work area or
elaborate shop set-up. I built many hundreds of carburetors on a single 2- x 4-foot work table with
two vises, one mounted near each end.

Nothing too fancy is required, but you need a suitable place to work on the carburetor. The area
needs to be clean and free from airborne dust/dirt. The area should be well ventilated and
preferably detached from the house, or at least isolated from any room containing a furnace or
appliance with a pilot light.
A workbench for rebuilding carburetors
A small workbench is all you need for
carburetor rebuilding. It’s handy to
have a vise with soft jaws close by for
holding aluminum carburetor parts.
Soft jaws can be fabricated from
aluminum angle or pieces of wood.
The work area could be as elaborate as a full-size workbench or as small as a tray table. The more
room you have, the less complicated things usually become. We’ve seen some builders develop
elaborate carburetor stands to hold the carb. Here, we prefer to cut a 4- to 5-inch piece of wood
from a 2 x 4 or 2 x 6.
Main body on a wooden carburetor stand
A small section cut from a
piece of soft pine makes an
excellent carburetor stand. It
also protects the soft metal
during staking procedures.
This allows you to place the carburetor on a flat surface without the linkage resting on the
workbench or tray. It is actually quite easy to bend the throttle shaft, so it’s best not to put any
unneeded pressure on it when removing the air-horn retaining screws. The small wooden block
also protects the main components from damage during staking operations, driving in tubes, etc. It
is also beneficial to have some sort of tray under the carburetor during the rebuilding process. A
large cookie sheet or pizza pan works well. The pan keeps all the parts in one location and from
rolling off the bench onto the floor.
Using a large baking pan to rebuild a carburetor
These large baking pans make a great
work area. They are large enough to
hold all the parts of the carburetor
without piling them up. They also keep
items from finding their way off the
bench and onto the floor!
Safety Equipment
Safety equipment can be more important than getting the actual work done. Before any job can be
performed, you should outline the procedures needed to accomplish the task and the required
safety gear to perform the work. First and foremost on our list is hearing protection.

I know that a lot of you are thinking, “Why in the world would I need hearing protection to build a
carburetor?” Many of you will be using high-pressure compressed air and blowing it into tiny
passages. The high-frequency sound produced could affect your hearing. Some tapping, pounding
and banging with hammers and punches is required for different operations. Even though the
noises produced are not always sharp or extremely loud, the exposure is cumulative and over time
could produce hearing loss. As prevention, purchase and wear hearing protection anytime you
work in an environment where you may be exposed to loud noises.
Hear protection items to be worn when using high pressure air
Regardless of what type of hearing
protection is preferred, it should be
used any time high-pressure
compressed air is used. The
high-pitched sound created by forcing
high-pressure air into tiny carburetor
passages can cause permanent
damage or hearing loss.
Working with carburetors also requires the use of solvents, most specifically carburetor cleaners
and brake cleaners. These chemicals are not nearly as harsh today as in years past, but they still
contain warning labels regarding contact to the skin and inhalation hazards. We use and highly
recommend chemical-resistant gloves. Solvents should be used in a well-ventilated area, as high
concentrations can produce an explosive hazard and inhalation dangers.
Solvent resistant gloves
Solvent-resistant gloves
protect hands from harsh
chemicals. Nitrile gloves are
far more chemical-resistant
than medical.
Eye protection is highly recommended. Use of chemical solvents, high-pressure air, drilling,
grinding, sanding, etc., dramatically increases the risk of flying particles and projectiles. Even the
tiniest piece of metal in your eye can require a trip to the doctor to get it removed. I can’t think of
anything that burns more than carburetor cleaner in your eye(s). Get eye protection! Those with
side shields are highly recommended.
Eye protection
Several types of eye
protection are shown.
Side shields are
recommended, especially
for any sanding/grinding
operations.
