High Performance Crate Motor Buyers Guide High Performance Crate Motor Buyer's Guide
BRAND NEW, UPDATED EDITION!
by John Baechtel
What could be better than horsepower in a box? That’s essentially
what you get when you buy a crate motor – factory-built
horsepower that’s ready to bolt in to your project vehicle.
In the last 10 years, the crate motor market has boomed – stock
and high-performance V-8 motors are available from Chevrolet,
Ford, and Chrysler, and from many aftermarket companies as
well. Most feature factory warranties, a multitude of options, and
to-your-door delivery.

John Baechtel is an expert on performance engines. In this book,
he’ll show you what crate motors are available from the major
manufacturers; he also covers the accessories you’ll need, how to
prep and install a crate motor, and how to get it started and
properly broken in. It’s the ultimate guide to buying a crate motor
and getting the most out of it.

Crate Engines
A Pallet of Power
High-performance crate motors have become the power plant of choice for street rodders, street
machiners, and other automotive enthusiasts seeking good performance at a reasonable cost.
Many engine shoppers don’t want to bother with the myriad details of rounding up parts and
assembling their own engines. There are numerous engine kits on the market, but crate motors
make everything easy for the average enthusiast because they are fully assembled and
guaranteed to make their advertised torque and horsepower ratings.

Basic engine assemblies have always been available from the major automakers, but only recently
have they seen the advantages of offering competitively priced performance engines to meet the
demands of brand-loyal enthusiasts. Chevrolet, Ford, and Chrysler have all developed high-output
(HO) performance engines for the enthusiast market, and the high-performance industry is literally
bursting with reliable crate motor suppliers.
There’s no guesswork in a crate motor assembly because the combination has already been
developed and tested. The customer doesn’t have to worry about selecting the wrong camshaft or
getting a compression ratio that is too high for pump gas. Most crate motor manufacturers are
careful to validate their performance claims so you can be assured of getting a motor that performs
as advertised. This doesn’t mean that you can never get a lemon in a crate, but in most cases, the
crate motor you buy will deliver the power level and reliability you are seeking.
355 small block
High-performance crate motors like
this 355-hp ZZ4 Chevy small block with
aluminum heads have become the
most popular choice for street rodders,
street machiners, and engine
swappers. Complete and
semi-complete performance engines
are available from the factory or from
the high-performance aftermarket.
The High Performance Crate Motor Buyer’s Guide is intended to give you an in-depth look at the
most popular crate motors so you can decide which one is right for you. It will also show you how to
make the best selection and categorize all the essential components you will have to supply in
order to install the engine and get it running.
The Crate-Motor Concept
Crate motors come in various stages, depending on the manufacturer. The best crate motors are
complete from oil pan to valve covers, including the intake manifold. Most factory crate motors are
production line assembled, which means they receive the same select-fit components applied to all
production engines. Factory crate motors typically offer one horsepower per cubic inch, with
factory-engineered components that pass stringent production durability tests, and they carry a full
factory warranty. They are also designed to meet current emission requirements when they are
installed with all the appropriate accessories.

Most high-performance aftermarket crate motor assemblies offer one horsepower per cube and
more. They come in various stages of completion, with broad choices regarding induction systems.
Some engines are complete assemblies, while other are long block assemblies (which have no
intake manifold or distributor). Some factory engines are so complete, that they even come with
factory headers, spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor, carburetor, and air cleaner. This makes
them an attractive package for engine swappers seeking the least painful way to put some grunt in
their street rod or street machine.
Engine compartment GT40 302 cid small block
Crate motors can take the worry and hassle
out of building a hot street car because they
eliminate selecting and chasing down parts,
getting the machine work done, and
performing tedious assembly work. You can
add your own choices for the induction,
exhaust, and ignition systems, to get a
personalized combination.
Factory crate motors like this 302
GT-40 Ford small block have
become increasingly popular for
both carbureted and fuel-injected
applications.
Aftermarket crate motor Small block Ford crate engine
Aftermarket crate motors generally offer more
variety in terms of displacement, power ratings,
and high-performance equipment content.
Most crate motors carry limited warranty terms
and feature higher-quality parts and better
workmanship than the average rebuilt engines
available locally.
The typical crate motor will be lacking a water pump and distributor, and not many come with a
harmonic dampener, flywheel, or flex plate. Some are offered without intake manifolds, but most
come with valve covers that you may or may not like. Additionally you’ll need items such as motor
mounts, spark plugs, ignition wires, headers, fuel lines, a starter, and other accessories to get your
engine up and running. Depending on the vehicle or the application, you will probably already have
some of these components from the previous engine. This can make your crate motor experience
easier, but not necessarily foolproof or trouble free.
Factory Vs. Aftermarket Crate Motors
If you choose a factory crate motor, you are purchasing an assembly that has been engineered
and tested in the same manner as a production engine. This means that it meets all of the strict
performance and durability levels that the factory deems necessary to ensure trouble free
operation for the length of the warranty period, and well beyond that with proper maintenance.
Factory engines have to meet stiff requirements regarding power output, piston fit, ring and valve
sealing, oil consumption, and component longevity. They are assembled with all new parts and
carry generous warranty terms. Thousands of these engines are on the road delivering strong,
reliable performance for a reasonable cost.
Aluminum cylinder head Cast verses forged crankshaft
Buyers frequently have a choice between
cast-iron and aluminum cylinder heads. Iron is
more detonation prone and aluminum is easier
to port and repair. Match your cylinder head
selection to give your application the most
advantages.
Both forged and steel crankshafts are
available. Always choose a forged
crank if you plan to lean on the motor
with RPM, boost pressure, or nitrous.
Performance aftermarket crate motors also deliver good performance. While most factory engines
are assembled with modern hypereutectic pistons, aftermarket engines are offered with cast
pistons, hypereutectic pistons, and forged pistons, depending on the supplier. Some of these
engines offer more than one horsepower per cubic inch and are built with quality aftermarket
performance parts. While factory quality-control measures are more consistent, quality control in
the aftermarket is at the whim of the manufacturer. It is possible to buy a motor with good pieces
that have been poorly matched and sloppily assembled. The major suppliers represented in this
book generally supply high-quality performance engines. Occasional lemons have been known to
slip through both at the factory and in the performance aftermarket, but the quality is generally
high. If you are not sure about something, work out the terms and get it in writing, or shop
elsewhere. As you will see, the available choices are plentiful.
Hot tanking an engine block
The first step in creating a powerful
and reliable crate motor is hot-tank
cleaning, inspecting, and pressure
testing the block to determine its
suitability for use in a
high-performance application.
