Ford Crate Motors
5.0-liter (302 ci) 320-hp GT-40 Engine
Ford’s 5.0-liter GT-40 SVO long-block assembly is a solid high-performance value, rated at 315
horsepower (B-303 cam) or 320 horsepower (E-303 cam). It includes a Ford Racing induction kit,
headers, 65-mm throttle body, and factory shorty headers. It is well suited for high-performance
applications, thanks to the use of GT-40 high-flow, aluminums cylinder heads, GT-40 valvetrain,
and a hydraulic roller cam.
5.0 Liter GT40 engine assembly
This is the 5.0-liter GT-40
assembly with aluminum cylinder
heads. It’s rated at 320 hp when
used with the Ford Racing GT-40
EFI induction kit, factory headers,
and a 65-mm throttle body.
The 9:1 compression 5.0-liter GT-40 engine is built at Ford’s Cleveland engine plant on the same
production line as Mustang 5.0-liter engines. It is a bolt-in assembly for all late model Mustangs,
Fox chassis cars, and F-150 pickups. The short-block assembly includes the block, crankshaft,
connecting rods, pistons, timing chain, standard rocker arms, roller tappets, push rods, oil pump
and pickup, oil pan, valve covers, front covers, water pump, dampener, manual transmission
flywheel, spark plugs, and related long-block engine parts. These engines come with the short front
cover and water pump. Your original front cover and water pump will be necessary for use in other
applications.

The significant power increase over a stock 5.0-liter engine is achieved with the use of high-flow,
GT-40 aluminum performance cylinder heads, PN M-6049-Y303. These revised castings flow
considerably more air than the standard production 5.0-liter iron cylinder head. Ford Racing
engineers also added the GT-40 Valve Train Kit, P/N M-6090-L302, which includes valvesprings,
retainers, keepers, seals, and premium stainless-steel valves with undercut stems and swirl
polished heads. Valve diameters are 1.84 inch and 1.54 inch for the intake and exhaust valves
respectively.
The final link is the power department is the use of a Ford Racing high-performance hydraulic roller
cam, P/N M-6250-B303. It offers a valve lift of 0.480 inch with 224-degrees of duration at
.050-inches of lift. This cam retains good low-end power characteristics while increasing power
significantly above 4000 rpm.
5.0-liter GT-40
INSTALLATION TIPS

Oil Pan:
Check for interference if installing in other than a Fox chassis.

Flywheel/Damper:
Use proper type 157 or 164-tooth, 3 or 4-bolt flywheel with 50-oz unbalanced production damper.

Front Cover:
Use correct design, with or without fuel pump mounting, and with correct water pump compatibility.

Distributor
Use the type that is compatible with a roller cam.
Use 351W firing order 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8.

High Performance Crate Motor Buyers Guide High Performance Crate Motor Buyer's Guide
BRAND NEW, UPDATED EDITION!
by John Baechtel
What could be better than horsepower in a box? That’s essentially
what you get when you buy a crate motor – factory-built
horsepower that’s ready to bolt in to your project vehicle.
In the last 10 years, the crate motor market has boomed – stock
and high-performance V-8 motors are available from Chevrolet,
Ford, and Chrysler, and from many aftermarket companies as
well. Most feature factory warranties, a multitude of options, and
to-your-door delivery.

John Baechtel is an expert on performance engines. In this book,
he’ll show you what crate motors are available from the major
manufacturers; he also covers the accessories you’ll need, how to
prep and install a crate motor, and how to get it started and
properly broken in. It’s the ultimate guide to buying a crate motor
and getting the most out of it.
