The mid-eighties saw a downsizing of vehicles and smaller lighter
models were introduced. One of Jeep's innovations was to use
unitary construction. They also gave their models many car
characteristics. Early engines were nothing special but putting in the
new 4-litre straight-six made a dramatic improvement while the
Renault-sourced turbo diesel also helped in the European market. It
was these strong sales that made Chrysler buy the Jeep name. The
Comanche trucks were cleverly marketed as stylish pick-ups. This is

Jeep CJ-5 and CJ-7 4x4 Portfolio 1976-1986
The 4x4 market changed in the 1960s, from utility to one with
an increasing emphasis on the leisure market. In the 1970s
the CJ range was aimed more at the recreational sector and
the CJ-7 was designed with more room, simpler transmission
and an automatic gearbox. The CJ-5 took on some of these
extra features and until 1983 the two models were developed
very much in parallel. Special package versions were issued
to please buyers. The Wrangler took over from the CJ in

Jeep J-Series Pickups 1970 thru 1982
Truck derivatives of the Wagoneer range appeared at the
same time as the big station wagon itself, in November 1962.
Since 1969 they have been known as J-series trucks. As
originally introduced the Jeep trucks were simply utility
vehicles. But fashions changed and Jeep trucks began to
appear with dress-up packages such as Honcho, Golden
Eagle and Custom. The larger-capacity models were the
favorite and the smaller trucks became a fashion accessory.
