1967 – Mustang Grows and Cougar Comes on Board
In an effort to maintain pace with the competition, Ford increased the size of the Mustang for 1967. The new body allowed the 390-ci FE engine to be stuffed between the pony car’s fenders. Rated at 320 hp, the Mustang’s 390 was essentially the same engine that powered the GT Fairlane and Comet Cyclone. 1967 would also be the last year that the high-performance 289 would appear on the option list. Perhaps due to the Mustang’s added bulk, very few performance-minded customers ordered the hot small-block, making the cars rare and valuable today. Lincoln-Mercury joined Mustang in 1967 with a new offering called the Cougar. Mercury also offered the 390 as an option, but the high-performance 289 was not to be found on the option list. As was the case with the GT Fairlane and Comet Cyclone before it, the 390 Mustang seemed to receive little respect from the automotive press of the day.
While the Mustang in stock form might come up short on the street against the offerings of other manufacturers, the 390 responded well to minor modifications, which easily turned the grown-up pony into a winner. Popular Hot Rodding magazine took on a Mustang equipped with the 390 engine and C-6 automatic transmission as a project car in 1967. The car remained a street driver during the project and also logged hundreds of passes down the drag strip. Working from a very respectable baseline elapsed time of 14.10 at 100 mph, the magazine team got the Mustang down to a best of 13.29 at 103 mph without ever having the engine apart. If further proof of the ability of the 390 Mustang to run with the best is required, National Dragster reported that the team of Chesson and Terry set an NHRA National Record in B/SA at 12.79 with their Mustang.

The Ulrey Brothers 427 Fairlane charges off the line at the 1967 NHRA Nationals. 1966-1967 Fairlanes and Comets with the 427 wreaked havoc with the competition in both Stock and Super Stock classes in the late 1960s. (Larry Davis)

The Birth of the Cobra Jet In 1967, the antics of young men in East Providence, Rhode Island, would ultimately lead to the development of what is arguably the best all-around performance car built by Ford during the Total Performance era. One evening Bob Tasca’s sons took one of the dealership’s 390-ci Mustangs out for a little ride and returned the car with a blown engine. This mishap created the opportunity for the performance team at Tasca Ford to work their magic on the car as the necessary repairs were performed. Starting with a Police Interceptor 428 short block, the Tasca guys installed a set of 427 Low Riser cylinder heads and a GT 390 hydraulic camshaft. Topped off with an aluminum intake manifold and Holley 4-barrel carburetor, the combination literally transformed the performance of the Mustang coupe.
Quite impressed with the improvement in the car and not being one to pass up what could potentially be a hot sales opportunity, Bob Tasca, Sr. approached the powers at Ford with his performance idea for the Mustang. Initial skepticism from the company quickly faded after the Tasca Mustang took to the Ford test track and recorded quarter-mile times of 13.39 at 105 mph with full exhaust and street tires. Apparently the folks in Dearborn were impressed enough with Tasca’s idea to begin plans for a 428-ci engine program for the 1968 Mustang.
They did not, however, adopt Tasca’s suggested name for the car. Tasca had touted the Mustang of his creation as the KR8, for King of the Road 1968. The KR label would later be found on Shelby Mustangs powered by the 428 Cobra Jet engine as the GT500KR. Bob Tasca had shown the suits in Dearborn that with no more than a standard-production short block and some bolt-on pieces from his parts department he could turn the Mustang into a world-beater on both the street and strip.

Total Performers: Ford Drag Racing in the 1960s by Charles Morris
The 1960s was arguably the most important decade for drag racing. It had exciting cars, thrilling races, and most importantly, factory participation. Among the best high- performance cars and engines were those coming from Dearborn, Michigan. Ford Motor Company’s “Total Performance Years” saw a breakthrough as drag racing helped the younger, performance- and style- conscious consumer to begin receiving some recognition.
Factory participation in drag racing pushed the envelope for high performance developments. Ford's FE-series engine, Police Interceptor, GT 390, Single Overhead Cam, Cobra Jet, and Boss 429 are all covered in detail. See the cars and the drivers that made them famous – Dick Brannan’s Goldfinger, Bill Lawton’s Mystery Mustang, “Dyno Don” Nicholson’s Eliminator Comet, Gas Ronda’s stretched Mustang, Al Joenic’s Batcar, and more.

Factory Lightweights: Detroit's Drag Racing Specials of the '60s Among racers it has never been a secret that a lighter car is a faster car—particularly in drag racing. When Detroit’s automakers got involved in organized drag racing, they paid heed to this principle, issuing a series of rare race-only cars that became legends in their own time. Factory Lightweights: Detroit’s Drag Racing Specials of the ‘60s chronicles these rare cars that still inspire admirers and imitators today, like the Ford Fairlane 427 Thunderbolt.
